Skin Trouble (redux)

Introducing…

Introducing the hero (and co-writer) of a reimagined Skin Trouble, originally announced for publication by First Second Books around 2009. Here’s Angela Watson, my wife and best friend (drawn here as I saw her about 26 years ago).

For a variety of reasons, I could never get the original version of the book, about human migration as based on our fathers lives, to work. A couple of years ago, pre-George Floyd, I tried reverting to my original idea for the book - an anecdotal memoir of what it’s like to be in a mixed race relationship, and how we experience that, both in the UK and the USA. Skin Trouble is about “race,” it’s about immigration, it’s about many questions that obsess us - that’s me and Angela - in these times. Most of all it’s about being human and how to survive in a world that often seems hostile to the idea of two people even having a relationship, because of the differing colo(u)rs of their skin.

Watch this space, and also my Instagram and Twitter feeds (regular updates, thoughts and art at both).
